Meet your judges: The news team

JAY JUDGE is the assistant managing editor for design and graphics at The Baltimore Sun. Since joining the paper in 1997, he has designed news and sports pages, managed the news design desk and helped coordinate the 2005 redesign project. Previously he worked at The Times of Northwest Indiana.
KATHY BOGAN is design director at the Rocky Mountain News, Denver, where she’s worked since 1995. She began her newspaper career at the High Country News, a biweekly environmental tabloid, starting her visual-journalism career in 1980. She worked at the Casper Star-Tribune (Wyo.) before the News.
STEVE CAVENDISH is the graphics editor of the Chicago Tribune. A native Tennessean, he got his start at the now-defunct Nashville Banner after escaping the sequin mines in which his family toiled for generations. He has been recognized by SND and other organizations for outstanding work while he was a designer at the Asbury Park Press (N.J.), San Jose Mercury News (Calif.) and The Washington Post.
SUSAN MCDONOUGH, design director at the Ottawa Citizen (Ontario, Canada) leads a group of designers and artists who produce graphics, print and Web content. A native of Montreal, she started her career in advertising before making the switch and joining the Toronto Star as an editorial designer. At the Star, she worked on editorial projects, participated in a redesign and helped implement a new production system.
EDDIE ALVAREZ is presentation editor at The Miami Herald (Fla.), a position he has had since July 2004. He oversees the design of news and features sections, as well as information graphics and illustrations. He manages 35 designers, graphic artists and illustrators. Alvarez joined the Herald in 1988 as a sports clerk and went full time as a sports copy editor in 1992 before working his way to assistant sports editor.
